Hon. Barbara Jaffe
Justice Barbara Jaffe received her BA, cum laude, from Syracuse University, as well as an MA in Italian Renaissance Art on a graduate fellowship in Florence, Italy. After six years in the wholesale antiques business, she attended Brooklyn Law School and obtained her JD. Justice Jaffe then represented indigent criminal defendants on appeal for The Legal Aid Society, successively served as principal court attorney to two Supreme Court justices in the Criminal Term, was elected to the New York City Civil Court, sat in that court and in the New York City Civil Court, and was appointed to the New York State Supreme Court, Civil Term, where she presides in an Individual Assignment Part and is specially assigned to try asbestos cases.
Justice Jaffe serves on the Executive Committee of the New York State Bar Association’s Entertainment, Arts, and Sports Section. She is a Founding Faculty member of New York County Lawyers Association’s (NYCLA) Art Litigation and Dispute Resolution Institute, and is a member of that association’s Pro Bono Committee and Supreme Court Committee, and has served on its Committee on Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, and Transgendered Issues. She co-chaired NYCLA’s Civil Court Practice Section and has lectured at numerous continuing legal education programs there and elsewhere, including the New York City Bar Association, which she represented as a delegate to the State Bar’s House of Delegates. She also served on the City Bar’s Committee on Nominations, Committee on Civil Rights, Art Law Committee, Special Committee on Capital Punishment, Committee on Civil Court, Committee on Criminal Law, and Special Committee on Public Service and Education, and chaired a joint City Bar/NYCLA committee that produced, in six languages, the “New York State Criminal Justice Handbook.”
Brian D. Graifman, Esq.
Mr. Graifman practices in the Supreme Court Litigation Division of Borah, Goldstein, Altschuler, Nahins & Goidel, P.C., handling all actions and matters in law and equity, including those affecting real property and landlord/tenant disputes.
Mr. Graifman’s 30-year background includes serving as Law Clerk to Hon. Roger J. Miner at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and successfully litigating Wall Street and business dispute matters, of which many were landmark cases against regulators.
Mr. Graifman is active at the New York County Lawyers Association (NYCLA), where he is immediate past Co-Chair of the state Supreme Court Committee and co-hosts an annual reception for new, appointed, re-elected and elevated judges, serves on the Board of NYCLA Foundation, and is a member of the Federal Courts Committee and Appellate Courts Committee. At the N.Y. City Bar Association, he serves on the Judiciary Committee, where he previously served from 2013 to 2016, rating judges, and previously was on the Committee on State Courts of Superior Jurisdiction.
Jeffrey Carucci, Esq.
Jeffrey Carucci is the Statewide Coordinator for Electronic Filing of the Unified Court System of the State of New York. Mr. Carncci is in charge of coordination of the comt system's E-Filing programs and the development the New York State Courts Electronic Filing System (NYSCEF), together with outreach to and training of the staff of the County Clerks, Judges and comt staff, and attorneys in all of the venues and courts in New York State in which electronic filing has been authorized. He directs the court system's NYSCEF Resource Center, which serves as a statewide help desk and training center for E Filing. Mr. Catucci has presented statewide and nationally on E-Filing and published va1ious a1iicles on EFiling in NY State. Mr Caiucci has served as a liason with comts in other states and the National Center for State Comis in regard to E-Filing. He has been in the court system since 1985 and has held various court positions including Clerk in Charge of the NY County motion support office in New York County Supreme Court, which processes over 35,000 motions annually.
Mr. Carncci has spoken often before Bar groups about motion practice and Electronic Filing in the State comis, such as at the "Navigating the Supreme Comi" and "Bridge the Gap" programs of the New York County Lawyers' Association. Mr. Carncci has received the Bernard Botein Awai·d from the Association of the Bar of the City of New York in recognition of his outstanding services to the court system, the Bai· and the public at large. In November of 2013 he was given the NYLJ Impact award which honors those whose vision and commitment to work for change has had a profound impact on the law and the legal profession in New York State.
Christopher Gibson
Christopher Gibson is the Deputy Statewide Coordinator for Electronic Filing. He oversees the operations of the Statewide E-Filing Resource Center, where he has served for a number of years as the manager in charge. Mr. Gibson works closely with Mr. Catucci and the technical staff of the Unified Corut System on the development and enhancement of the NYSCEF software. He has assisted in the corut system's expansion of E-Filing statewide, which involves close coordination with and assistance to County Clerks and coruts, as well as local Bar groups. Mr. Gibson has conducted numerous training sessions around the state for County Clerk and corut staff and for attorneys and paralegals. Among these were demonstrations of the NYSCEF system to the Electronic Filing Task Force of the New York State Bar Association and to groups at several Annual Meetings of the State Bar. In addition, he has taught many E-Filing sessions to attorneys and court staff concentrating on how to use the NYSCEF system and regularly troubleshoots issues from court staff, County Clerks and the Bar. He audits filings in E-Filed cases in all counties in the State to ensure that no difficulties arise and works with comt and County Clerk staff to ensure that documents in E-Filed cases are processed smoothly. Mr. Gibson has received the Bernard Botein Award from the Association of the Bar of the City of New York in recognition of his outstanding services to the court system, the Bar and the public at large.
Margaret A. Malloy, Esq.
Margaret A. Malloy is Chief Counsel of the Office of Pro Se Litigation for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Her office screens all cases filed by pro se litigants (those cases comprise approximately 25% of the court's civil docket) and drafts bench memos and orders for the assigned judges. In addition, the office advises the court on managing pro se litigation, and drafts forms, guides, and other reference materials for the court and for litigants. Ms. Malloy also oversees the Court's Pro Bono Program. Before becoming Chief Counsel, Ms. Malloy was a Senior Trial Attorney at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission from 2006-2012 and an associate at Gladstein, Reif & Meginniss, LLP, from 2000-2006. After law school, Ms. Malloy clerked for the Hon. Denise Cote in the Southern District of New York. Ms. Malloy received her J.D. from Columbia Law School, her M.A. from the University of Minnesota, and her A.B. from Cornell University. Ms. Malloy was included in the New York Law Journal's 2016 list of Lawyers Who Lead by Example in the category of public service. Ms. Malloy has always enjoyed the technological aspects of law practice. As a law clerk, she assisted in setting up a case-management system for chambers. While at the EEOC, Ms. Malloy provided nationwide trainings on case-management and ediscovery software. In 2015, she gave a presentation at the National Conference for Pro Se Law Clerks on using word-processing and desktop-search software.
Timothy K. Beeken, Esq.
Timothy K. Beeken is a counsel at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP. Mr. Beeken, who became Managing Attorney in 2002, is responsible for providing risk management, knowledge management and quality control for the firm's litigation matters, including consulting on questions of court practices and procedures; managing the service, receipt and filing of submissions to courts and other tribunals; and overseeing the maintenance of dockets and litigation, corporate and trademark diaries. He also plays a substantial role in in-house litigation training and oversight of the firm's legal assistants and conflicts staff.
Prior to becoming Managing Attorney, Mr. Beeken focused on accounting litigation and a variety of other types of commercial disputes after joining Debevoise in 1991. Mr. Beeken is admitted to appear before the Southern, Eastern and Western Districts of New York, the U.S. District for the District of Columbia, the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the First and Second Circuits, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He is the Immediate Past President of the New York City Managing Attorneys and Clerks Association (Executive Committee 2004-2012, Executive Board 2012-present, Newsletter Committee 2002-present; Secretary 2012-2014; Treasurer 2014-2016; President 2016-2018) and a member of the New York County Lawyers' Association (Supreme Court Committee 2012-present), for which he is an editor of the annually published Attorneys' Guide to Civil Practice in the New York County Supreme Court.
Mr. Beeken received his B.A. in English (with Honors) from Haverford College in 1983, and his J.D. from Columbia in 1991, where he was a Stone Scholar, a member of the Journal of Environmental Law, an editorial assistant to Professor E. Allan Farnsworth, a research assistant to Professor Henry Paul Monaghan and an intern in the chambers of U.S. District Judge Leonard B. Sand, Southern District of New York.
