About This Course
This vitally important CLE program focuses on substance abuse and related issues which affect a surprising and disproportionate number of legal professionals. The program will raise attorney awareness about the challenges of identifying the initial behavior which indicate abuse of alcohol, drugs and even prescription medication. The consequences of such behavior, which constitutes an attorney's breach of ethical or legal obligations resulting in possible State Bar sanctions or resulting in criminal convictions will also be discussed.
Ronald N. Hoffman discusses common lifestyle factors which may precipitate such abuse including work related stress, family issues, and certain psychological conditions often contributing to the growth of these complex problems. The course will highlight how to identity initial warning signs and symptoms leading to a divergence from an attorney's usual patterns of behavior. Various other forms of addiction including medical marijuana, gambling, food, and inappropriate or unethical conduct will be reviewed. The course will conclude with a discussion of treatment options including Alcoholics Anonymous, psychological counseling and drug treatment programs.
