With the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Murphy v. NCAA, striking down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), opening the door to the possibility of legalized sports wagering in every state, at least those willing to start down this path, this course will examine what the possible long and short term effects of sports betting may be on the legal and regulatory environment surrounding professional and collegiate sports in the United States. Participants will gain a sense of where states are in allowing sports wagering, what types of wagering may be permitted and what safeguards have been put in place to avoid “fixing,” “shaving,” or the dissemination of key information that could favor bettors. The course will also examine the differing postures of the various professional leagues and colleges in embracing the possibility of legalized sports betting and what potential problems arise in each setting or context. It will also highlight steps sports entities and states are taking in implementing sports betting procedures and safeguards and what steps are under consideration to ensure the integrity of athletic competitions including an examination of the ethics of sports.
